| About Mary
Years ago, as a small child, I spent many an afternoon peeking
into my aunt’s office. There she taught reading to
a seemingly endless stream of children. She was a great and
gifted teacher and made the whole process so much fun. It
was. To the delight of the children and their parents, these
children all read, and read well. As I watched, I knew I
wanted to do that very same kind of teaching. I have been
a class teacher in many different kinds of schools and learned
a lot about the art of teaching.
I have always wanted to put the magical world of language arts into
the hearts and minds of children. I have taught for 30 years
now, and like it more than I did when I first began!
I received my B. A. from Mills College, my M. A. from Holy Names
College. I received my Reading Specialist and Educational Therapist
Certifications in the State of Washington, through a program at the
University and through a private clinic called Another Door to Learning
in Tacoma, Washington where I did two two summers of internship.
I have my qualification to teach the Orton-Gillingham method. Spire,
the series that I use comes from that method.
I also taught in Waldorf schools for seven years, where I learned
the importance of teaching language arts through imagery and storytelling.
